General Surgery Residency Programs
- Categorical - NRMP #1442440C0 - 2 positions
- Preliminary-NRMP #1442440P0 - 2 positions at PGY 1 level
- Non-pyramidal program
- RRC approved, 4 year accreditation (2003)
- 4 month rotation to Strong Memorial Hospital during PGY-3 year to gain experience in transplantation and pediatric surgery
- Residents completing the program log approximately 1,000 operative cases
- Call every 4th night. NYS DOH and ACGME compliant
- 66% of graduates enter surgical practice, remaining 33% complete fellowships
- Specialties include General Surgery, Thoracic Surgery,
Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Urology,
- For residents planning a career in rural areas, electives exist for increased experience in surgical subspecialties
- Formal weekly conferences include; Surgical Grand Rounds, M & M Conference, Clinical Case Presentation Conference,
- Protected conference time
- Educational/Academic Support - ATLS, ACLS, Scientific American Surgery, Evidence Based Medicine Journal Club,
- Inpatient Surgical Service consists of approximately 30 - 40 adult beds
- Patients are assigned to a team of residents working with a group of attendings
- All patients are teaching patients with direct housestaff involvement and responsibility
- Ward rounds supervised by Chief Residents are held each morning
- Outpatients are seen in the Surgical Clinic by residents and attendings together. One day per week in surgical clinic
- All applications for General Surgery must be submitted through ERAS
